A size 18 hook is about a third of an inch long, and it's the size a lot of winter trout flies get tied on. That's the whole test. When you're shopping for the best fly tying kit for beginners, the "100+ pieces" count on the label barely matters. What matters is whether the vise grabs that tiny hook and keeps it still while somebody new to this wraps thread under tension. If it slips, the kit's in a closet by February.

So I sorted this list by budget tier and judged every kit on the vise first. Four picks are worth your money. One popular wooden kit is worth skipping, and I'll say why.

Product Best For Price Range Amazon Rating
Colorado Anglers Standard Tool Kit Tightest budget Under $50 4.4/5
Kingfisher Rock Creek Vise with Tools Best vise for the money $50-$75 4.2/5
Ninnifly Fly Tying Kit (with vise) All-in-one gift with video lessons $75-$90 4.5/5
WETFLY Deluxe Fly Tying Vise & Tools Kit Classic trout patterns out of the box $75-$90 4.5/5

Prices and star ratings are what Amazon showed on November 3, 2026.

Will the vise in a beginner kit hold a size 18 hook?

Your odds are a lot better if the jaws close with a cam lever than with a screw.

John Likakis laid out the reason in a MidCurrent breakdown of vise jaw designs: the screw-collet mechanism "isn't seen too much these days except on the cheapest vises," while better beginner vises use cam-lever bar jaws or draw-collet jaws. He also points out that a Western trout tier's hooks run from about size 4 down to size 22. A beginner will get to 18 fast, because that's where zebra midges and Griffith's gnats live.

There's an old test worth borrowing from Al Campbell's beginner series on FlyAnglersOnline: clamp a few hook sizes and lean on each one. A good vise holds the hook until it bends or breaks. A bad one lets it slide first. Run it with a size 18 hook before the return window closes.

The catch nobody prints on the box: none of the four kits below includes size 18 hooks as far as their listings show (WETFLY's, for example, ships sizes 8, 12 and 14). Toss a pack of 18s in with the gift. They cost a few dollars.

Colorado Anglers Standard Tool Kit: Best Under $50

Colorado Anglers Fly Tying Standard Tool Kit with Wooden Box

This is the cheapest way into tying that I'd hand to someone, and with 1,523 Amazon ratings averaging 4.4 stars it's got the deepest review pile of anything on this list. The vise closes with a rear cam lever (you can see it in the listing photo) and sits on a pedestal base, so there's no hunting for a table edge thick enough for a C-clamp. It ships in a wooden box with a beginner tying guide by Frank Prekel.

The weak spot is materials. The listing copy mentions materials, but its "what's in the box" line names only the vise, tools and case. Plan on buying thread, hooks and feathers separately. The listing also doesn't print a hook range for the jaws, so give it the size 18 test the day it arrives.

Who it's for

Tight budgets, or a tier who mostly plans to tie Woolly Buggers and size 12-16 nymphs.

Pros & Cons

  • Pros: Under $41, pedestal base, cam-lever jaws, wooden storage box, beginner book included
  • Cons: Little or no material in the box, no published hook range

Price: $40.95 at the time of writing. Check the Colorado Anglers Standard Tool Kit on Amazon.

Kingfisher Rock Creek Vise with Tools: Best Overall

Kingfisher Fly Fishing Rock Creek Fly Tying Vise with Tools

My hot take for gift buyers: skip the all-in-one kits and buy a good vise-and-tools kit plus a little material. The Rock Creek is the one I'd build that around.

Kingfisher Fly Fishing is the house brand of the Kingfisher Fly Shop in Missoula, Montana, which its Amazon listing says two fishing guides founded in 1997. On its Rock Creek spec page, Kingfisher rates the jaws for hooks from about size 22 up to 1/0. That puts size 18 comfortably inside the range instead of right at the edge of it. The Amazon listing itself just says "a useful range of hook sizes," so the spec page is where the real number lives.

You get a rotary head on a hinged stem, a C-clamp and a canvas bag. The tool set covers a bobbin holder, whip finisher, bodkin, dubbing twister, hackle pliers and scissors, per the listing. It's a recent model, first listed on Amazon in March 2025, and it holds 4.2 stars across 52 ratings. That thin review base is the honest knock on it.

Who it's for

Anyone who'll actually tie trout flies past Christmas.

Pros & Cons

  • Pros: Manufacturer-rated for size 22 to 1/0 hooks, rotary head, full basic tool set, compact C-clamp setup, from a real Montana fly shop
  • Cons: No materials or hooks, C-clamp needs a table edge, only 52 ratings so far

Price: $59.95 at the time of writing. Check the Kingfisher Rock Creek kit on Amazon. Add size 18 hooks, black 8/0 thread, copper wire and pheasant tail, and you're at roughly the price of the all-in-ones below.

Ninnifly Fly Tying Kit: Best All-in-One Gift

Ninnifly Fly Tying Kit for Beginners with Vise and Travel Case

If the gift has to work with zero extra shopping, this is the one. Ninnifly's kit packs a C-clamp vise with a cam lever, 60 hooks, two ceramic-tip bobbins, thread and wire, chenille, feathers, dubbing, a hair stacker, a whip finisher and a zippered travel case. A QR code links to video lessons for three patterns: the Woolly Bugger, the San Juan Worm and the Black Beauty.

That last one matters more than it looks. The Black Beauty is a midge pattern, which means the kit's own lesson plan points a beginner toward small flies. Ninnifly's listing doesn't publish a hook range for the vise, though, so run the bend-before-slip test with a size 18 on day one. It holds 4.5 stars across 75 ratings.

Make sure you grab the version with the vise. Ninnifly sells a cheaper listing under nearly the same title, and the one linked here is the variant whose model number reads "KIT WITH VISE."

Who it's for

Gift givers who don't fish, and tiers who learn better from video than from a booklet.

Pros & Cons

  • Pros: Truly complete, video lessons, two bobbins so thread color changes are easy, compact travel case
  • Cons: Vise hook range not published, small material quantities run out fast, the vise-less sibling listing is easy to buy by mistake

Price: $79.99 at the time of writing. Check the Ninnifly kit with vise on Amazon.

WETFLY Deluxe Kit: Best for Classic Trout Patterns

WETFLY Deluxe Fly Tying Vise and Tools Kit

The WETFLY kit has the best material list of the all-in-ones for a trout angler. Pheasant tail, peacock herl, elk hair, grizzly and brown hackle, marabou, olive and grey dubbing, chenille, copper wire. That's enough to tie a pheasant tail nymph, an Elk Hair Caddis and a Woolly Bugger without buying anything else. It comes in a hard case with a book and a DVD, 24 items in all, and it's sitting at 4.5 stars on 709 ratings.

The vise is a Super AA style with a cam lever and a C-clamp. Other shops' versions of that design carry published ratings. Murray's Fly Shop, for instance, lists its Terra Pro Super AA at hook sizes 2/0 to 20. WETFLY doesn't publish a range for its own version, so treat 20 as a ceiling to verify, not a promise.

The included hooks are sizes 8, 12 and 14. Big enough to learn on. Not small enough for winter.

Who it's for

Trout anglers who want a box of real, fishable classic patterns from the first evening at the bench.

Pros & Cons

  • Pros: Strong natural-material selection, book plus DVD, hard case, 709 ratings at 4.5 stars
  • Cons: No hooks smaller than 14, C-clamp only, vise hook range not published by WETFLY

Price: $84.00 at the time of writing. Check the WETFLY Deluxe kit on Amazon.

Which fly tying kit should you skip?

The Colorado Angler Supply Wooden Fly Tying Kit with the EZ Vise (model Z791B). It's a handsome wooden station with a drawer, an EZ rotary vise and 11 tools, and it costs $126.99.

For that money you get a 4.0-star average across 45 ratings, no materials, and a vise whose jaws snug down with a screw rather than a cam lever, going by the product photos. In a FlyAnglersOnline thread on Colorado Angler's rotary vises, one EZ Rotary owner said it held hooks fine until he went big, and that he stripped the threads on the larger screw when he cranked it down too hard. Another poster in the same thread said a version of that vise he'd used had tolerances so bad "it barely held a hook." That thread is from 2015, so the vise may have changed. The price math hasn't. The Rock Creek kit plus materials and hooks costs less.

What makes the best fly tying kit for beginners?

In order of importance:

  1. A vise with cam-lever or draw-collet jaws that holds a size 18 hook without slipping. Everything else on a kit can be replaced for a few dollars, and the vise can't.
  2. Pedestal base or C-clamp, matched to where they plan to tie. A pedestal works anywhere; a C-clamp needs a table edge.
  3. A ceramic-tip bobbin. Fine 8/0 thread is what small flies get tied with, and a ceramic insert keeps it from fraying on a rough tube.
  4. Materials matched to the water they fish. Peacock herl, pheasant tail and copper wire cover a shocking number of trout nymphs. Bright yarn assortments mostly don't.

Rotary function is nice but rarely the deciding factor for a beginner. If they already own tools, skip the kit and buy a standalone vise instead.

One more thing worth doing once they start tying: tracking which of their own flies actually catch fish. They can try Bushwhack to log catches by fly and see which patterns earn their spot in the box.

Our Pick

Buy the Kingfisher Rock Creek Vise with Tools and spend the difference on size 18 hooks, black and olive 8/0 thread, copper wire and a pheasant tail. Its maker rates the jaws past size 18, and it comes from a working trout shop.

If it has to be one box with everything inside, get the WETFLY Deluxe kit for a trout angler or the Ninnifly kit for someone who'll learn from video. On a tight budget, the Colorado Anglers Standard Tool Kit will get them tying for about $41. And whichever one goes under the tree, put a pack of size 18 hooks next to it. Winter is midge season, and the fish don't care how pretty the wooden box was.
