Most panfish anglers drop a jig through the ice that's too big for the fish they're after, then blame the bait when the flasher shows marks rising and turning away. The fix costs less than a tub of waxies. Good tungsten ice jigs for panfish let you go a size smaller without losing depth control or feel, and you don't need a $4-per-jig boutique brand to get there. Every pack below is under $15 on Amazon, and each has one job: suspended crappie, weed-edge bluegill, deep perch, or a cheap starter assortment.

All four passed our verification on October 21, 2026: in stock, 4.0 stars or better, and at least 40 ratings on the listing itself. Plenty of good-looking tungsten packs failed one of those. They're not here.

Why do tungsten ice jigs for panfish outfish lead?

Because tungsten is heavy for its size, and winter panfish care a lot about size. The National Institutes of Health's PubChem database lists tungsten at 19.3 grams per cubic centimeter and lead at 11.34, so tungsten is about 1.7 times denser. A tungsten jig that weighs the same as a lead one takes up roughly 59% of the volume. Same weight on the line from a head that looks like a bloodworm instead of a pea.

Listings love to say tungsten is "half the size of lead." By volume, close enough. By diameter (what a bluegill actually sees) the same-weight tungsten bead is only about 16% narrower, because volume shrinks with the cube of the width. Real, on a fish staring at your bait from two inches away. Not magic.

The feel part is underrated. Weight on a short ice rod keeps the line straight under the hole, so a crappie that rises and inhales the jig shows up as slack or a tick instead of nothing. Gord Pyzer, the longtime Outdoor Canada fishing editor, says in his piece on tungsten for panfish that he chuckles when anglers credit tungsten with sinking faster than lead. His reason for fishing it is that it lets you downsize for a tough bite while keeping the tight, sensitive line he wants in winter. On a flasher, it also keeps your jig mark tight and readable.

Lead isn't dead. Walt Matan wrote in a MidWest Outdoors column on mixing up your ice jigs that lead spoons often outperform tungsten in shallow water because of how they flutter on the fall. Tungsten earns its money deeper than about ten feet, in wind, or around weeds.

Reaction Tackle 3mm Glow Spots: Best for Suspended Crappie

Reaction Tackle Tungsten Ice Jigs, 3mm Wonder Glow Spots (6-pack)

Suspended crappie feed up. They hang over a basin and rise to eat, so the jig doesn't need to punch through anything. It needs to be small, visible, and slow enough on the last few feet that a fish can track it. A 3mm tungsten head does that, and the glow spots help a fish looking up find it at dusk.

Per the listing, the bodies are 97% tungsten with UV glow finishes, and the 3mm carries a #16 hook, enough for a single waxworm or a tiny plastic tail. If wind or depth pushes you heavier, the same Reaction Tackle tungsten ice jig line also comes in 4mm, 5mm, and longer 6mm and 7mm versions.

Who it's for

Anglers who fish open basins at dusk and dark for crappie, and want a glow jig small enough for bluegill on the same trip.

Pros & Cons

  • Pro: Glow spot finish suits low light and stained water
  • Pro: Six jigs per pack, the most of any pick here
  • Pro: Same jig doubles for bluegill on the same trip
  • Con: Several reviewers say the 3mm is smaller than expected
  • Con: The #16 hook is fiddly with cold fingers

Price: $12.98 for six at the time of writing. Check current price on Amazon.

MUUNN 2.7mm Gold: The Weed-Edge Bluegill Pick

MUUNN Tungsten Ice Jigs, 2.7mm Gold #18 (5-pack)

Big bluegills on a weed edge are the fussiest fish in this post. They sit just outside a cabbage or coontail line, stare at a jig for ten seconds, and bite so lightly most takes never reach the rod tip. Matan notes a bluegill can suck in a bait from two or three inches away. You want the smallest head that still gets down, on the lightest line you trust.

That's this jig. MUUNN's 2.7mm gold variant carries a #18 hook, and gold is a common first pick for gills in clear water. Thread one spike on and fish it nearly still.

The caveat matters. If the gills are buried inside thick weeds instead of sitting on the edge, a 2.7mm jig won't push through the stalks. Matan's answer for that is a 4 to 4.5mm tungsten that pounds through to the bottom, which is a good job for the Alichino pack below.

Who it's for

Bluegill anglers working weedlines who'll drop to 2- or 3-pound line to get bit.

Pros & Cons

  • Pro: 2.7mm is the smallest jig in this lineup
  • Pro: #18 hook matches a single spike or waxworm
  • Pro: Gold finish is a go-to bluegill color through the ice
  • Con: About $3 a jig, the highest per-jig price here
  • Con: Too small for heavy weeds or deep water

Price: $14.99 for five at the time of writing. Check current price on Amazon.

Tungsten4Anglers 5mm 1/16 oz: Best for Deep Perch

Tungsten4Anglers 97% Tungsten Ice Jigs 5mm 1/16 oz #12 (5-pack)

Perch on deep mud flats are a different game. The school moves, and the jig has to get back down before the fish wander off the flasher. Matan recommends a 5mm tungsten for the 20- to 40-foot range, and this pack is a 5mm, 1/16 oz teardrop on a #12 hook, the biggest jig in this lineup. Per the listing it's 97% tungsten with Japanese-made hooks.

The #12 hook is the other reason it suits perch. They've got bigger mouths than gills and hit harder, so a larger hook holds a minnow head or a couple of spikes and sticks. Five assorted colors per pack.

Who it's for

Perch anglers on deep flats and basins, and anyone chasing panfish deeper than 20 feet.

Pros & Cons

  • Pro: 5mm, 1/16 oz head gets down fast and holds in wind
  • Pro: #12 hook holds minnow heads and multiple spikes
  • Pro: Assorted colors in one pack
  • Con: Too much jig for skittish shallow bluegill
  • Con: Falls fast enough to blow past suspended fish if you free-spool it

Price: $12.99 for five at the time of writing. Check current price on Amazon.

Alichino 4mm Variety Pack: Cheapest Way to Start

Alichino Tungsten Ice Jig Set, 4mm 1/25 oz Variety (5-pack)

New to the ice? Start here. Five 4mm, 1/25 oz tungsten jigs in five colors for under nine bucks, about $1.68 a jig. You'll lose some down the hole the first trip, and it stings a lot less at this price. Four millimeters is also the most useful single size for panfish: light enough for crappie and gills, heavy enough for 15 to 20 feet, and right in Matan's weed-punching range. Amazon's review summary says buyers like the color variety and durability.

The catch is quality control. Some reviewers report eyelets painted over. Clear them with a pin at the kitchen table, not with frozen fingers on the ice.

Who it's for

First-season ice anglers, kids' jig boxes, and anyone testing colors before buying more of the one that works.

Pros & Cons

  • Pro: Lowest price per jig of the four picks
  • Pro: Five colors for figuring out what fish want
  • Pro: 4mm covers crappie, bluegill, and weed work
  • Con: Some reviewers report paint plugging the eyelet
  • Con: Paint quality gets mixed reviews

Price: $8.38 for five at the time of writing. Check current price on Amazon.

What size tungsten jig for crappie and bluegill?

Start at 3mm for bluegill and 3 to 4mm for crappie, and only go up when depth or wind forces it. Most people size up out of impatience, not because fish want more bait. A rough guide, using Matan's weed and deep-water sizes plus our shallow-water picks:

  • Under 10 feet, calm: 2.7 to 3mm, or an old lead teardrop
  • 10 to 20 feet, or windy: 3 to 4mm
  • Pushing through weeds: 4 to 4.5mm
  • 20 to 40 feet: 5mm

Line matters as much as the jig. A 3mm tungsten on 6-pound line won't fall right or feel like anything. Pyzer fishes 2- to 4-pound test for crappie, and that range is where most panfish anglers live. Pair it with a soft, light-action ice rod so the tip shows a bite before the fish spits the jig.

What to Look for Before You Buy

Four things change how a tungsten jig fishes:

  • Hook size versus head size. 3mm and under pairs with #16 to #18 hooks, 5mm with #12. A mismatch either misses fish or spins wrong.
  • Glow or plain. Glow helps at dawn, dusk, in stained water, and under heavy snow, but a plain gold or black jig often wins in clear water at noon. Carry both.
  • Clean eyelets. Paint in the eye is a common complaint on cheap tungsten, so check every jig at home.
  • Price per jig, not price per pack. You will lose jigs.

Then write down what worked: size, color, depth, time. Panfish patterns repeat winter to winter on the same lake, and if you log your catches in Bushwhack you'll have that history next time you're standing over a hole. Before any of it, check the ice. The Minnesota DNR's ice thickness guidelines call for at least 4 inches of new, clear ice for fishing on foot, and double that on white ice.

Our Pick

If you buy one pack, make it the Reaction Tackle 3mm Wonder Glow Spots. Six jigs, the right size for crappie and bluegill, and a finish built for low light.

Add the Tungsten4Anglers 5mm for deep perch, and grab the Alichino variety pack if you're just starting out. The MUUNN 2.7mm is a specialist: great on weedline gills, pricey per jig, and not worth it unless that's how you fish. Curious which one actually produced by February? That's what Bushwhack's features are for.
